Here Is An Album of ten "IN" songs. Any current fad that is accepted by the masses is considered "IN," but what's "IN" today might very well be passe tomorrow. Surfboards and sports cars - miniskirts and mods - long haired boys and short haired girls - these are considered "IN" today. Who knows what new fads will replace these tomorrow ! That's what's different about the songs on this record, as well as the artists who perform them. They have a special, lasting appeal and when you play this record, say five years from now, it will be just as "IN" then as it is now.

For openers, we begin with the title song from one of Broadway's all-time box office smash musical comedies, "Hello, Dolly!" This rendition by clarinetist Pete Fountain gives an even greater dimension to the song that has become everybody's favorite. Motion picture actress and singer, Debbie Reynolds, reached the apex of her recording career, with her never-to-be-forgotten version of "Tammy," which still has a fresh and charming appeal for people of all ages. "Mr. Sandman," by The Four Aces, is one of the best examples of the perfect marriage between a great song and performance. The definitive version of "Sentimental Journey" is reprised hereby the artist who has used this song as a theme during his long and successful career as a bandleader, Les Brown. "That Old Black Magic," certainly one of the best known and most beloved standards, is sung by one of the best known and most beloved singers, Judy Garland.

Of all the many recorded versions of "Lover," there is little doubt that the one by Peggy Lee is the most imitated and most remembered. The marvelous Mills Brothers are included on this record, singing "You Always Hurt The One You Love," which did as much for their long and outstanding career as any song they ever recorded. The diminutive Brenda Lee is also represented with "I'm Sorry," the recording that sold over one million copies and earned her a gold record, her first. The orchestra of the late Ted Weems, featuring the whistling of Elmo Tanner, gives out with the memorable "Heartaches." The popularity of this recording has surpassed all barriers of time and still remains one of the most consistent best sellers. Finally, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong is heard once more, with his rousing and spirited recording of "When The Saints Go Marching In," a fitting end to this memorable album of ALL-TIME HITS ON THE "IN" SIDE.

Though clarinetist Pete Fountain has long been a fixture on the New Orleans jazz scene, his greatest notoriety came from his 1957-1959 nationally televised appearances with the Lawrence Welk orchestra leading a small group playing traditional jazz. Fountain, a Benny Goodman disciple who plays the old standards with indefatigable fervor, is a fixture on Mardi Gras day in New Orleans, leading the early morning parade down St. Charles Avenue with his "Half Fast" marching club. As Fountain walks, he plays the numbers on this record that comprise his standard repertoire--"While We Danced at the Mardi Gras," "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans," "Basin Street Blues," "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans," "When the Saints Come Marching in March" and "St. Louis Blues." --John Swenson

The time was the spring of 1960. The place was historic New Orleans. The occasion was the opening of a brand new night club - The French Quarter Inn.

It was a memorable evening, particularly for PETE FOUNTAIN. This marked the opening of his own club, and a multitude of his friends and fans gathered to pay their respects and wish him well. Seated in the audience was BRENDA LEE, who had a night off during an extensive one-nighter tour and, being a fan of Pete's, had decided to join the well-wishers on this night.

Brenda was introduced to the audience by Pete, and the sustained applause that resulted led to some unrehearsed, on-the-spot singing by her with Pete and his band. Thus began a mutual admiration society, and the friendship and respect each has for the other have grown over the years since their first impromptu duetting in New Orleans - years that have brought great and lasting success individually to these two talented artists. (For the record, Brenda and Pete had never met personally before that night, and it is doubtful that either one of them - or anyone else in attendance - imagined that not too many years later they would join forces in this exciting and unique album.)

Like all good musical weddings, this one contains something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue - each selection is given a rare and brilliant interpretation, faultlessly blending two out-standing individual talents. It was inevitable that Brenda and Pete would finally record such an album, and while it took some years to materialize, the results were more than worth the waiting - and it would be safe to predict that FOR THE FIRST TIME will surely not be the last time!
